fined owner of an oil tanker Tk 3 crore for polluting the environment by
spilling oil in Karnaphuli River.
On Friday, oil tanker “Desh-1”, which carried fuel for power
stations, developed a leak following
collision with a lighter
vessel,“City-38”, at Dolphin Jetty-3 of the river. Around 10 tonnes of oil
spilled in the river.
CPA in a clean-up operation removed the oil from the river,
using four vessels and two boats, said officials.
Owners of both Desh-1 and City-38 appeared at the DoE,
Chattogram office for a hearing, said Azadur Rahman Mallick, director of DoE
(Chattogram metropolitan area). The oil tanker owner has been instructed to pay
the fine immediately, he said.
In another hearing, DoE fined Super Knitting and Dyeing
Industries Limited at Nasirabad in the city Tk 5.12 lakh for damaging the
environment through discharging effluents into waterbody, he said.
DoE also fined Smart Group Limited Tk 6.40 lakh for razing
hill in Fatehabad Thandachhari area in Hathazari.
On Sunday, DoE fined Samabay Abasik Private Limited Tk 2.05
lakh in West Sholashahar area and Epic Development Limited Tk 96,000 in
Perceval Hill area of Chawkbazar over similar offence. DoE also fined CSS
Corporation Limited Tk 2.40 lakh over air pollution.
