2020: The High Court on Thursday ordered the government to with-hold
retirement benefits of Md Moarraf Hossen, outgoing director of the National
Institute of Cancer Research & Hospital (NICRH), for not installing life
support equipment in the facility’s Intensive Care Equipment (ICU).
The High Court has questioned the legality of
non-installation of life support equipment in the ICU of the government-run
cancer hospital.
A division bench comprising of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and
Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order on Thursday following a newspaper
report.
Many critical patients are deprived of proper treatment for
lack of life support facility at the ICU of NICRH.
The High Court issued the rule asking the government to
explain why negligence in installing life support equipment in the NICRH shall
not be declared illegal.
The health secretary will have to submit a probe report on
the matter within a month.
Mentionable, about 1,08,000 cancer patients die every year
in Bangladesh, says a report published by an international cancer research
agency. In Bangladesh the only hospital for poor cancer patients is NICRH.
