2020: Over twenty thousand street dogs of Barishal city will be administer
anti-rabies vaccine starting from Friday. The drive will continue till January
14.
The drive will be conducted by Barishal City Corporation
under health directorate’s national programme for preventing rabies.
BCC has already started miking about the programme.
Dr Robiul Islam, veterinary surgeon and coordinator of the
programme said the number of street dogs were 6,000 in 2014.
Now it has increased to 20 thousand and BCC has planned to
vaccinate all street dogs. Vaccinated dogs will be tagged with a specific
colour to avoid duplication or omission, the BCC official said.
The programme will run simultaneously in 30 wards of BCC.
Sixty trained dog-catchers of Dhaka, 30 of BCC along with 30 vaccinators, 30
data collectors, 30 van porters and four supervisors will conduct the drive. If
a vaccinated dog bites someone, it cannot spread rabies.
The initiative was undertaken to free Bangladesh from rabies
within 2022, and we are progressing towards that goal, Dr Robiul added.
Advocate Tapan Chakraborty, an animal rights activist said,
“This will save citizens from rabies, and play a role in creating mass
awareness to stop cruelty towards animals.”
