2019: Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Tuesday
said that the city corporation will fine those who will carry out development
work without environmental compliance.
RAJUK, WASA, DPDC and contractors of City Corporation who
are digging up roads and carrying out development activities must do their job
by protecting the environment, he said, adding that failure to comply with
rules and regulations will result in fine.
He made the statements at a roundtable discussion tilted
“Dhaka in Grip of Uncontrolled Pollution: Citizen’s Thought” at Jatiya Press
Club.
Speaking on the occasion, General Secretary of Bangladesh
Institute of Planners Adil Mohammed Khan said environmental pollution has now
turned acute, which poses a risk to the public health.
In his speech, architect Iqbal Habib said, “When schools,
colleges and hospitals are badly affected by sound pollution, the government
has turned the secretariat area into a ‘no-horn zone’. It is not anything
sensible.
“They should have declared school, college and hospital area
‘no-horn zone’.”
He urged all to discharge their duties properly to get rid
of the scourge of the all kinds of pollution.
“We have to fight with whatever we have,” he said.
Those who are neglectful of their duties and incapable of
carrying out their responsibilities should step aside immediately, he said.
Among others, Chairman of Poba Abu Naser Khan, President of
BIP Akthar Mahmud and public health expert Dr Lenin Chowdhury spoke on the
occasion.
