WHO, UN Foundation, partners launch COVID-19 fund

Health Desk- 14 March 2020: A new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Solidarity Response Fund will raise money from a wide range of donors to support the work of the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners to help countries respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fund, the first-of-its-kind, enables private individuals, corporations and institutions anywhere in the world to come together to directly contribute to global response efforts, and has been created by the United Nations Foundation and the Swiss Philanthropy Foundation, together with WHO.

“We are at a critical point in the global response to COVID-19 – we need everyone to get involved in this massive effort to keep the world safe,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.

The fund launches with major support already lined up, including from Facebook and Google who have instituted a matching scheme for funds raised through their platforms, while individual donors are also supporting the fund through www.COVID19ResponseFund.org.

“We can’t ignore the fact that this is a truly global problem – one that requires truly global solutions,” said Elizabeth Cousens, UN Foundation President and CEO.

Coronavirus: Recommendations, advice of WHO for the public

Health Desk- 13 March 2020: The World Health Organization (WHO) has given some recommendations and advice for the public over coronavirus as it has already turned into a pandemic.

If you are not in an area where COVID-19 is spreading or have not travelled from an area where COVID-19 is spreading or have not been in contact with an infected patient, your risk of infection is low.

It is understandable that you may feel anxious about the outbreak. Get the facts from reliable sources to help you accurately determine your risks so that you can take reasonable precautions. Seek guidance from WHO, yourhealthcare provider, your national public health authority or your employer for accurate information on COVID-19 and whether COVID-19 is circulating where you live.

It is important to be informed of the situation and take appropriate measures to protect yourself and your family.

If you are in an area where there are cases of COVID-19 you need to take the risk of infection seriously. Follow the advice of WHO and guidance issued by national and local health authorities.

For most people, COVID-19 infection will cause mild illness however, it can make some people very ill and, in some people, it can be fatal.

Older people, and those with pre-existing medical conditions (such as cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease or diabetes) are at risk for severe disease.

স্বর্ণকারদের অকাল মৃত্যুর হার বেশি : গবেষণা প্রতিবেদন

স্বাস্থ্য ডেস্ক- ১১ মার্চ ২০২০: দেশে স্বর্ণকারদের অকাল মৃত্যুর হার বেশি। তাদের গড় আয়ু ৫৯ বছর। ৫৫ শতাংশ ক্ষেত্রে তাদের মৃত্যুর প্রধান কারণ কার্ডিওভাস্কুলার রোগ, ইস্কেমিক হার্ট ডিজিজ ও স্ট্রোক অন্তর্ভুক্ত।

বাংলাদেশে স্বর্ণকারদের মৃত্যুর কারণ নিয়ে পরিচালিত এক গবেষণায় এমন তথ্যই উঠে এসেছে। মঙ্গলবার বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব মেডিকেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের (বিএসএমএমইউ) শহীদ ডা. মিল্টন হলে এই গবেষণা প্রতিবেদন প্রকাশ করা হয়। বিএসএমএমইউয়ের নিজস্ব অর্থায়নে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পাবলিক হেলথ এন্ড ইনফরমেটিকস বিভাগের গবেষকরা এই গবেষণা পরিচালনা করেন।

অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথি ছিলেন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক ডা. কনক কান্তি বড়–য়া। বক্তব্য রাখেন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপ-উপাচার্য (গবেষণা ও উন্নয়ন) অধ্যাপক ডা. শহীদুল্লাহ সিকদার, কোষাধ্যক্ষ অধ্যাপক ডা. মোহাম্মদ আতিকুর রহমান, আইসিডিডিআর,বি-এর ইমেরিটাস সায়েনটিস্ট ডা. মো. ইউনুস।

সভাপতিত্ব করেন ও স্বাগত বক্তব্য রাখেন পাবলিক হেলথ এন্ড ইনফরমেটিকস বিভাগের চেয়ারম্যান অধ্যাপক ডা. সৈয়দ শরীফুল ইসলাম। ভারবাল অটোপসি পদ্ধতিতে করা গবেষণার ফলাফল উপস্থাপন করেন এই গবেষণাটির প্রধান গবেষক পাবলিক হেলথ এন্ড ইনফরমেটিকস বিভাগের সহযোগী অধ্যাপক ডা. মো. খালেকুজ্জামান।

গবেষণার ফলাফলে জানানো হয়, বাংলাদেশে আনুমানিক তিন লক্ষ মানুষ স্বর্ণকার পেশায় নিয়োজিত। স্বর্ণকারদের অকাল মৃত্যুর হার বেশি, যেখানে তাদের গড় আয়ু মাত্র ৫৯ বছর। ৫৫ শতাংশ ক্ষেত্রে মৃত্যুর প্রধান কারণ কার্ডিওভাস্কুলার রোগ, যার মধ্যে ইস্কেমিক হার্ট ডিজিজ ও স্ট্রোক অন্তর্ভুক্ত।

মৃত স্বর্ণকারদের রোগের ইতিহাস ঘেঁটে দেখা গেছে, তাদের ৪৫ শতাংশ কার্ডিওভাস্কুলার রোগে ভুগছিলেন এবং ২০ শতাংশ আক্রান্ত ছিলেন ক্যান্সারে।

WHO helps Samoa and Tokelau to prepare for COVID-19

Health Desk- 10 March 2020: WHO continues to support Samoa and Tokelau with preparations for COVID-19.

Both countries received infrared thermometers to assist with screening at ports of entry and healthcare facilities. They also received personal protective equipment (PPE) including medical masks, gloves and surgical gowns for doctors, nurses and patients to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

With Samoa on the cusp of declaring the end of its measles outbreak, having achieved a 46-day window since the last infectious period of measles and no new cases nor related deaths, the twin-island of approximately 200 000 people is now preparing for COVID-19.

As of 21 February 2020, 95% of the 1 868 persons who were admitted to hospital had recovered and returned home while approximately 134 499 persons, representing 95% of the eligible population, were vaccinated.

Samoans are still reeling, however, from the 83 deaths due to the outbreak and affected families are receiving psychosocial support from the Ministry of Health.

Bangladesh confirms first case of coronavirus

Health Desk- 09 March, 2020: Authorities in Bangladesh have confirmed first three patients of Covid-19 which has been the talk of the world.

The Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) on Sunday also confirmed that three other people, who were in close contact with the infected trio, have also been quarantined.

Disclosing the matter at a press briefing, IEDCR Director Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora said that two of the three infected — all aged between 20 and 35 — returned recently from different cities in Italy. One of them is a woman and the other two are men.

She said: “The trio are now undergoing treatment at a hospital, and for security reasons, we are not disclosing their identities and addresses at the moment. But they are in stable condition now.”

Meanwhile, in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the government on Sunday urged Bangladeshis returning from six countries — China, Italy, South Korea, Singapore, Iran and Thailand — to remain in self-quarantine for 14 days.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) latest data (as of 10 am CET 8^th March 2020) in last 24 hours a total of 105 586 confirmed (3656 new) globally while only in China 80859 confirmed (46 new), 3100 deaths (27 new) and outside of China 24727 confirmed (3610 new), 484 deaths (71 new) and 101 countries/territories/ areas (8 new) have been attacked with the COVID-19.

করোনায় বাংলাদেশে আক্রান্ত তিন

স্বাস্থ্য ডেস্ক- ০৯ মার্চ ২০২০: বাংলাদেশে তিন জন করোনা ভাইরাস রোগী শনাক্ত হয়েছে। আইইডিসিআর এর পরিচালক প্রফেসর ডাঃ মীরজাদী সেব্রিনা ফ্লোরা রোববার আইইডিসিআর মিলনায়তনে কোভিড-১৯ সংক্রমণ বিষয়ে বিশ্ব, বাংলাদেশ ও প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশীদের পরিস্থিতি তুলে ধরতে গিয়ে এ তথ্য জানান।

আইইডিসিআর-এর ভাইরোলজি ল্যাবরেটরিতে কোভিড-১৯ আক্রান্ত হতে পারেন এমন ব্যক্তিদের নমুনা পরীক্ষা করে তিন জনের নমুনাতে কোভিড-১৯ পাওয়া গেছে। এদের মধ্যে দু’জন ইতালী থেকে আগত প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশী। বাকী একজন ইতালী ফেরত প্রবাসীর পরিবারের নারী সদস্য। তাদের উপসর্গ মৃদু হলেও তারা সবাই হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন। তাদের বয়সের সর্বনিম্ন ও সর্বোচ্চ সীমা ২০-৩৫ বৎসর।

উল্লেখ্য, উক্ত দু’জন ইতালী প্রবাসীর নমুনাতে কোভিড-১৯ সনাক্ত হবার পরে তাদের সংষ্পর্শে আসা ৪ জনের নমুনা সংগ্রহ করে ল্যাবরেটরি পরীক্ষা করে ১ জন ছাড়া তাদের নমুনাতে কোভিড-১৯ পাওয়া যায় নি। তাদের মধ্যে ২ জনকে হাসপাতালে কোয়ারেন্টিনে রাখা হয়েছে, বাকীরা তাদের নিজ ঘরে স্বেচ্ছা কোয়ারেন্টিনে আছেন।

সাংবাদিকদের প্রশ্নের জবাবে প্রফেসর ফ্লোরা জানান, এখনই স্কুল বন্ধ করার কোন প্রয়োজন নেই। কারণ কোভিড ১৯ বাংলাদেশে এখন সে ধরণের ব্যাপকতা নিয়ে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে নি। তিনি সাংবাদিকদেরকে রোগীদের ব্যক্তিগত পরিচয়ের গোপনীয়তা যেন প্রকাশিত না হয় তার অনুরোধ জানান।

স্বাস্থ্য অধিদপ্তরের রোগ নিয়ন্ত্রণ শাখার পরিচালনায় আন্তর্জাতিক বিমান বন্দরসমূহ, সমুদ্র বন্দরমূহ, স্থল বন্দরসমূহে বিদেশ থেকে আগত সকল যাত্রীর তাপমাত্রা পরীক্ষা করা হচ্ছে।

ইয়াবাসহ মাদক বিক্রেতা আটক

স্বাস্থ্য ডেস্ক- ০৯ মার্চ, ২০২০: ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়ার আখাউড়ায় ৯ হাজার ৭৮০ পিস ইয়াবা ট্যাবলেট ও তিনটি মোবাইলফোনসহ সাইফুল ইসলাম নামে এক মাদক বিক্রেতাকে আটক করেছে বর্ডার গার্ড বাংলাদেশের (বিজিবি) সদস্যরা।

রোববার রাতে উপজেলার সেনারবাদী এলাকা থেকে তাকে আটক করা হয়। সাইফুল নরসিংদী জেলার ব্রাহ্মণদি গ্রামের বাসিন্দা।

বিজিবির ২৫ ব্যাটালিয়নের অধিনায়ক লে. কর্নেল মো. গোলাম কবির জানান, গোপন সংবাদের ভিত্তিতে বিওপির বিশেষ টহল সীমান্ত পিলার ২০২৪ থেকে আনুমানিক ৩০০ গজ বাংলাদেশের অভ্যন্তরে সেনারবাদী নামক স্থানে অভিযান পরিচালনা করে ৯ হাজার ৭৮০ পিস ইয়াবা ট্যাবলেট এবং ৩ টি মোবাইলসহ ১ জনকে আটক করে।

এ ঘটনায় তার বিরুদ্ধে আখাউড়া থানায় মাদকদ্রব্য নিয়ন্ত্রণ আইনে মামলা দায়েরের প্রস্তুতি চলছে।
